LOS ROQUES - POSADA PIANO Y PAPAYA

The archipelago of Los Roques is a group of islands and cays in the Lesser Antilles belonging to Venezuela which have an estimated area of 40.61 square kilometers and are located between the Archipelago Las Aves (west) and the Island of La Orchila (at east) to 176 km north of Caracas, which represents one of the main attractions of the country, is part of the Federal dependencies of Venezuela, the national park and is estimated in 2007 1,800 people had fixed (being the most populated federal agency). It has an approximate area of 221,120 hectares between land and sea space, and is considered the largest marine park in Latin America.


Los Roques has an atoll structure, rare in the Caribbean but typical of the Pacific Ocean, with two extern
al barriers formed by coral communities, which protect the archipelago from the strong currents, too, a lagoon of shallow waters and sandy bottoms. This park consists of 40.61 km ², 1,500 km ² of coral reefs, 42 Keys coral origin that surround a central lagoon of 400km ² and shallow waters, two barrier reef (east of 24 km and Southern 32 km) and 300 sand banks, islands and cays, from a considerable area, such as Cayo Grande 15.1 km ², to the Gran Roque that despite being the most populated only has 1.7 km ² (170 hectares) in size.
